** Based on the Glendale College Summer Workshop, play The Great Yam Festival at Sweet Potato Hollow by Ken Gray and Jill Benone

By Jill Benone:
Three PTA ladies and their children, accompanied by Mike Lichtman travel to Sweet Potato Hollow, Arkansas. The ladies have been asked to judge the "Miss Yam" beauty contest, and the citizens, concerned with over-building the town, are dealing with the old feud between the Hatfields and McCoys The mayor is "Slick Willie" Claxon, whose wife, Ronnie Sue, declares over and over that she "will always stand by [her] man". Financial experts offer opinions on the benefits of development (Mammy Hatfield: "Hot Diggety Drive-Thru!), while others want to retain the rustic simplicity of the hollow. At the still in the boggy swamp, Ol’ Baldy, the moonshiner is discovered to have grown long, flowing hair. There is minoxodil in the water! This saves the day as the town will become wealthy from the new hair tonic made at Ol’ Baldy’s still.

It was an election year – Bill Clinton won -- the local political scene revolved around over-development, and Tammy Faye Bakker who was "standing by her man". This script is easily re-workable.

Projected donation to PTA: $5,000.
