Stage Crew Chief & Set Construction Chief & Follies Stage Manager & Best Boy & Gaffer & Grip & Procurer of Cardboard & A Whole Bunch of Other Things Besides & Real Good Guy: Tom Dibble
By Jill Benone:
Among the several interesting things about this show was the program credit for Tom Dibble, one of the invaluable men behind the scenes.
"Indiana Jones" had just been released, so of course Follies’ hero was named Shenandoah Schultz. The VW kids purchased a carpet and a dusty old star from Abu Hassan, (politically correct?) who had a mysterious shop on Brand Boulevard. Of course, it was a flying carpet. Shenandoah, his girl Lola Lissome with the PTA ladies and kids flew to Mauckingbar. This was a black light number – the carpet and parts of the actors’ costume were florescent. The carpet was placed on a gurney draped in black, under which were stagehands propelling them across the stage as the singers sang "Catch a Falling Star". Stars (also florescent) hung from the irons, and it really looked as if the carpet was flying. The audience gasped.
Once in Mauckingbar, they dealt with the Crown Prince, a princess, Uppity the Lord High Chancellor, Slippity the Lord High Treasurer, two sentries (Left Guard and Right Guard) and three cooks named Hashem, Stirem, and Friem. Shenandoah, of course, defeats the villain, and all’s well that ends well. This could easily be updated. The flying carpet gag is sure-fire.
