By Jill Benone:
Musical Director Steve Hill was off on professional gigs, touring, among other places, Russia. GCC grad student Rob Hager stepped in for two years. The new program/poster artist, recruited at the last minute, was a little intimidated by the project, but Nancy Campbell’s slides of the opening credits maintained the cartoon feeling. The program listed the steering and production committees, along with director’s notes.

In the story, the new Superintendent of Schools, Bob Sanchis, has been kidnapped, and a large tunnel has opened under the Youth House. With the ongoing comments from a newscaster, two intrepid reporters along with the obligatory PTA ladies, kids, and Gary Good form a search and rescue party, and descend the tunnel. Underground, Queen Cagliostra and her secret civilization are planning to take over the world, starting by holding Sanchis captive. Of course, VW rescues him. City of Glendale officials are much in evidence. The Zeppolinis have become detectives. Cagliostra and her henchmen are thwarted in their vile scheme amongst much song and dance – it turns out they just wanted to learn to dance the Can-Can, which they were invited to do in the final scene.

An extensive program note related the story of Sanchis’ appearance in the show. A good guy, he instantly grasped the concept of Follies and plunged right in, even though he was a little late for his college reunion on Saturday night.
