FATHERS’ FOLLIES OF 1958
The Eleventh Year: March 21 and 22, 1958
Producer: Allan Zeltzer
Director: Joe Sauers

By Jill Benone:
There is no script available. The newspaper publicity (Glendale News Press, 3/16/58), may be the source of the commonly misunderstood confusion about the source and legal production of the show.

The newspaper story states that show is "presented by the Verdugo Woodlands Dads’ Club". Fathers’ Follies has always been listed on both poster and program as “Presented by the Fathers of Verdugo Woodlands PTA”, which is a legal point. As a PTA activity, Follies is covered by the organization’s blanket insurance. This misunderstanding was due to become an active irritation in next two decades.

Incidentally, the use of music is also covered by the district’s yearly royalty-free contract with ASCAP.

An early newspaper story mentions that skit captains were named, dancing and singing choruses were given their assignments, and rehearsals were under way with a cast of one hundred men and one woman, Beth Allen, the choreographer. The paper continues to say that all proceeds go into the general budget of Verdugo Woodlands PTA.

The program indicates the presentation was composed of skits, songs, and dances. I remember one skit, “Blah”, because my father was in it. There was no dialogue (all the actors said “blah” in place of words) and I think it involved a body in the library discovered by the inhabitants of the house, the police, and a hero-type detective.
