  FATHERS FOLLIES OF 1949
The Second Year: March 31, 1949
Producer: John Gurash
Director (Production Manager): Joe Sauers
Writers: Larry Clemmons and Alden Waite
Music: The Verdugo Woodlands "Pops" Orchestra

By Jill Benone:
The Fathers’ Night skits, including the break-through event of 1948, had been performed at the Sparr Heights Community Center, strictly for a Verdugo Woodlands audience. The 1949 show is the first show officially called “Fathers’ Follies”, the first show for the general public, and certainly the first show at Glendale College. No programs or scripts have been located.

The format for Fathers’ Follies was inspired by all-male shows during World War II, the memory of which was fresh in the minds and experiences of the men involved. They were also aware of the all-male shows at universities such as Yale and Princeton. For many years, the shows ended with the entire cast singing “ A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody”, the Ziegfeld Follies signature tune.

As reported by Mrs. Norman C. Joy, Second Vice-President
The year would not have been complete without the main attraction – Fathers’ Follies. . . a full scale finished production with Mr. J.T. Gurash, Mr. Louis Caldwell and Mr. Joe Sauers.. Words cannot tell the value of this event – nor can they describe the show -- but the dads have a grand time, and again we cannot help but realize what an unusual group of parents we have – working together and having so much fun while doing the job. This affair was also an financial success, and the welfare fund of the group was increased by a little less than $200.00.
